Spinning an Apple until it Explodes at 28,500fps - The Slow Mo Guys

Afþreying

Compressed air can be used to levitate rounded objects. Sometimes said rounded objects start spinning so fast that they give up on being round objects. Gav films all the action over 1000x times slower than real time. Check out KiwiCo.com/SlowMoGuys and get your first month free!

Honestly I am impressed by the physics present to get this done. Just to put some numbers down. The outer edge of the apple experienced a centripetal acceleration of 18906 m/s/s (if that were a linear acceleration you could reach the speed of light in a little under 4 and a half hours). This acceleration presenting a force of about 1891 N (425 lbs of force) I assumed 4 cm as the radius and 0.1 kg as the mass. Formulas for the fans - 2pi/t=w=angular velocity in rads/s w*r=v=tangential velocity in m/s v^2/r=ac=angular acceleration in m/s/s ac*m=force in newtons

Did the math, that apple is spinning at approximately 336 times a second along the axis goes along the core plus its precession, which, unfortunately I don't know how to calculate, or rather don't care to input the time to figure it out. it took approximately 28,000 frames to complete a quarter rotation, multiply by 4 and you get 336,000 frames to complete one rotation. Seconds are divided in thousandths of a second. Divide 1000 into 336,000 FPS and you get 336 rotations per second. Like said this is also not calculating for forces on procession or oblation.

When I was a kid I had a toy with a variable speed ducted fan, aimed with a joystick. It lifted latex balloons that had plastic landing gear so they would be stable at rest. Blowing air past the top of a balloon would lift it into the stream, so you could control the position of the balloons in 3D space by aiming the fan and controlling its speed. Simple, yet fun. It looked like magic to a casual observer. No wires!
